Germany: Dresden residents react as mask requirement lifted for shoppers in Saxony

Dresden residents shared their reactions on Friday, as Saxony became the first German state to lift mask requirements for indoor shoppers.

The decision to relax the rules under Saxony's Corona Protection Ordinance comes at a time where the seven day incidence rate for COVID-19 in the state is below 10.

"I think it's wonderful (masks are no longer required), it's a relief, you can communicate better with each other, you can breathe better, it's very nice," said Hannelore, a high street shopper.

"I try to protect myself as much as I can, I am fully vaccinated, but I would still say you don't necessarily have to challenge it (spread of virus), so it slowly increases again", said Hartmud, a cautious shopper at one of Dresden's supermarkets.

The new rule is expected to be in place until at least July 28, with masks still required on public transport and at hairdressers, as well as other personal service providers.

SOT, Uwe, Shopper (German): "I practically leave the mask on here in Lidl and will not take it off when shopping elsewhere now, because I would be happy if it were different, but the numbers are going up and the forecast does not look like would make sense for me personally to take the mask off when I go shopping."
