Mesh WiFi Networks - Time For A Moan (feat. AVM FritzBox)

Are consumer mesh WiFi networks really mesh networks at all? Aren't they just repeaters that work a bit faster than they used to? Claims of intelligent failover and healing seem to be complete nonsense.

In this episode of 'Time For A Moan', I'm discussing mesh WiFi and why I think it's another victim of misleading and arguably totally inaccurate marketing. I'm also taking a look at the AVM FritzBox mesh network interface.

It's made out to be this saviour of all WiFi problems when, in reality, it does not offer the 'self-healing' properties that it suggests and secondly, it can be extremely tricky to set up in a way that doesn't lead to more problems. In my opinion, the infrastructure of even a small home WiFi deployment has to be well thought through and the idea that you can just buy three nodes, chuck them around your house and never have problems again is absurd.

Let me know if you use a mesh WiFi setup. Was it super simple to install and, if so, has it always worked as you expected? I'd especially love to hear from you if own a mesh system that does genuinely use something like STP to heal and re-route traffic when needed.

Thanks for watching and please subscribe to my channel if you enjoyed the video.
