On April 28, 2022, Aspen Germany hosted a panel discussion entitled “Leadership in Times of Crisis: Leadership in a Digital World”.
The Covid-19 pandemic has had an impact on the way most industries work, but arguably the biggest change has been a shift towards virtual work as many resorted to working from home to mitigate the spread of the virus. Many at the leadership level were suddenly confronted with a new way of leading virtually through the unprecedented crisis of a global pandemic. Now that governments are rolling back restrictions, many are returning to the workplace while others continue to work from home. This hybrid model brings forth a new set of challenges and opportunities for leadership.
The purpose of our panel discussion was to examine what virtual leadership means in times of crisis. Which core competencies are needed for effective leadership in an increasingly digital workplace? What are the advantages and disadvantages of virtual leadership in theory and practice? Which intercultural and intergenerational differences define communication in a virtual world and how is virtual leadership experienced at different management levels? Finally, we intend to look at the future of leadership in a digital world – how will this new way of leading likely continue to evolve in the face of a hybrid model in which some continue to work from home while others return to the office?
Together with Prof. Dr. Natalie Bartholomäus, Vice President Sustainability, People & Culture, Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences,Ursula Deschka, Member of the Board of Management of ERGO Deutschland AG, Uwe Kopp, Head of Project-Management Skills (Qualification & Coaching), Group Project Management Office at CLAAS KGaA mbH, and Claire Scollar, Owner, Claire Scollar Unternehmensberatung and Owner, LoS League of Sales GmbH, we discussed these topics in a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Stormy-Annika Mildner.

This event is part of a series on “Leadership in Times of Crisis,” which was initiated in 2021 to establish innovative event formats that shed light on responsibility and leadership in a wide range of societal areas.
