German lower house of parliament passed an amendment to the Infection Protection Act that will allow coronavirus restrictions to be enforced on a federal level, rather than state level.
The amendment still needs to pass the upper house of parliament, the Bundesrat on Thursday, and be signed by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, but the curfew rules could effectively apply from the weekend.
Meanwhile, as lawmakers voted to grant the central government power to issue nationwide restriction, police used pepper sprays to disperse the protesters outside the Bundestag. Multiple people were arrested in the process.
Germany is currently facing a third wave of coronavirus infections, with lockdown being in place at least until the second half of April in a bid to curb the community spread of COVID-19.
According to the latest figures compiled by the Robert Koch Institute, Germany has seen over 3 million confirmed coronavirus cases and over 80,000 deaths with COVID-19.
