The EU and its member states have put together large-scale rescue packages to save the economy from a complete collapse in the wake of the corona crisis and to soften the social impact. Another EU recovery instrument, “Next Generation EU”, including a “Recovery and Resilience Facility”, is currently being negotiated. As a result of the support measures, debt is rising enormously. In order to get a grip on debt and reduce inequality, calls for the introduction or increase of property taxes are becoming louder again – also in Austria, a country without wealth tax. How should wealth taxes look like in concrete terms and what are their benefits? What would be the benefits of the introduction of a European wealth tax as advocated by Gabriel Zucman and others? How can we increase conciousness and support towards this issue?
