This video was made for the "In tribute to..." series of the Facebook page of the Lübeck Philharmonic. Giuseppe Cambini was probably born 275 years ago, on February 13, 1746. As we are still in a hard lockdown and not able to rehearse and play together, my colleague Christina Eickhoff and I decided to record this movement at home and make a split screen version. I hope, you can enjoy this "Corona-version".

Giuseppe Cambini was an Italian violinist and composer who was very successful in Paris at the end of the 18th century. However, little is known about his origins or where he died. It is believed that he was born February 13, 1746 in Livorno Italy. His place of death is unknown.

An anecdote says that Cambini and his fiancée fled Naples by ship around 1767 after the failure of one of his operas, which was then captured by pirates. Only thanks to the help of a wealthy Venetian could he be ransomed from slavery in Spain.

Around 1770 Cambini moved to Paris, where he was presumably introduced to musical life by the composer François-Joseph Gossec and where his works, especially his concertante symphonies, were performed with great success.

Today, Cambini is best known for his Chamber music. Cambini's variety of instrumentation was quite advanced for its time, and played an important role in the development of both the string quartets and wind quintets we know today in French repetoire.

Giuseppe Cambini war ein italienischer Geiger und Komponist, der Ende des 18 Jahrhunderts sehr erfolgreich in Paris wirkte. Seine Vita ist allerdings nur bruchstückhaft bekannt. Man geht davon aus, dass er am 13. Februar 1746 im italienischen Livorno geboren wurde. Sein Sterbeort ist unbekannt.

Eine Anekdote besagt, dass Cambini um 1767 nach dem Misserfolg einer seiner Opern gemeinsam mit seiner Verlobten per Schiff aus Neapel floh, welches dann von Piraten gekapert wurde. Nur dank der Hilfe eines wohlhabenden Venezianers konnte er in Spanien von der Sklaverei freigekauft werden.

Um 1770 zog Cambini nach Paris, wo er vermutlich vom Komponisten François-Joseph Gossec in das Musikleben eingeführt wurde und seine Werke, besonders seine konzertanten Sinfonien, mit großem Erfolg aufgeführt wurden.

Heutzutage ist Cambini hauptsächlich wegen seiner Kammermusik bekannt. Er komponierte für die unterschiedlichsten Besetzungen, die für die damalige Zeit ungewöhnlich modern waren und spiele eine wichtige Rolle bei der Entwicklung des Streichquartetts und des Bläserquintetts in Frankreich.
