Visited the VanMoof London brand store at 5-11 Short's Gardens, Covent Garden, West London, WC2H 9AZ earlier today to test ride the 2021 S3 electric bike in Matte Grey, and wanted to show it off a bit.
In this video, I show switching between power-assist mode levels, and ultimately setting it to 4, which I believe to be the maximum level setting. Unfortunately couldn't show the whole riding experience as it's too difficult to ride while recording.
If you'd like my own personal opinion on how well the test-ride went, I'd say that it was satisfactory at best. It's fine to ride on flat roads, but as soon as you're riding along bumpy terrain, you will feel every bump due to the bike having no suspension at all. Once on somewhat flat road though, it's remarkably enjoyable and entertaining to ride, sometimes even exhilarating once you engage the turbo boost mode with the right thumb button. The left thumb button engages the horn, which can be changed to several different ones through the mobile app. Thankfully the seat-post can supposedly be replaced with one that has an shock absorber built-in, so that should help with ironing out any harsh bumps.
I don't like that you can't change the power assist level while the ebike is moving, you need to stop fully before the assist level can be changed, and it does take a bit of time to start to switch, which is a tad bit annoying.
Build quality of the ebike itself is fantastic. As you can see, it's a display model, and apart from the slightly squeaky hydraulic disc brakes, it has almost zero scratches on it, and feels very well-built. Nice and study during riding. Doesn't feel cheap at all.
The LED matrix display on the frame's top tube is a little difficult to make out in the bright sun, but covering one of your hands over it solves that small issue.
The handlebars are surprisingly very comfortable to hold onto, no issues with those.
Fantastic that it comes with built-in headlight and rearlight. Very cool to see.
I believe that VanMoof have greatly improved their shipping process so their delivery time is only around three weeks to wait now, in comparison to what it was like in the past when people were waiting in excess of five months for their brand new S3 bikes to arrive.
I'd say that it's worth to purchase if you're going to use the ebike for mostly city and road riding. It's definitely not ideal for off-roading or for bumpy terrain.
