The reason, as per Ather, is that Vodafone Idea will shut down its 3G services on 27 August 2020, in Chennai and Bengaluru which would lead to the Ather 450s equipped with Vodafone SIM card to switch to 2G services.

The electric automobile maker had equipped several Ather 450 s with a Vodafone SIM cards. The electric scooters require mobile data connectivity for providing onboard navigation services and OTA updates.

"Vodafone was supposed to sunset 3G coverage much later, but this has taken us by surprise," Ather Energy said on Friday in an official statement.
