Video details
Vodafone Idea has paid the telecom department most of its Rs 1,200 crore dues towards licence fee and spectrum usage charge (SUC) for the April-June period, after missing the deadline of July 15, people familiar with the matter said.

Government officials said a further delay in payment could have led to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) invoking bank guarantees, as per rules — something the cash-strapped telco cannot afford to take.

"The payments have started coming in for the circles and the telco did not have much choice, because further delays would have led to invoking of bank guarantees," said a senior government official.

The company did not respond to ET's queries.

Invoking of guarantees might have forced the telco into bankruptcy. The carrier had told the Supreme Court recently that no bank was willing to provide any guarantees, given its debt — Rs112,520 crore at March end — completely eroded net worth and existential crisis owing to the over Rs50,000 crore that it still owes the government in adjusted gross revenue dues.

The lossmaking telecom carrier had informed the DoT of its inability to pay on time, and had sought more time to pay the fee with interest for the April-June quarter.

Government officials said Vodafone Idea did not want to be pulled up by the SC for not meeting payment obligations, especially when the top court had already questioned the operator's ability to make payments and had asked for its financials #VodafoneIdea #AGR #GreatNews
