What is anarchism?
Anarchism (or libertarianism) is the idea that relationships should be based on mutual associations and not violence and coercion. Anarchists reject slave-master relationships and usually oppose hierarchical top-down political structures, the military, particularly the state-run military industrial complex economic model and also state-run authoritarian schools and education. Anarchists view as highly suspect, patriarchal family structures. Likewise, anarchists oppose dictatorial religious leaders and groups who ostensibly promote religion while really practicing politics. In fact, one of the most famous anarchist slogans is ‘No Gods, No Masters’. The ‘No Gods’ part is generally considered to refer to anti-clericalism, that is, opposing religious-based political, hierarchical power structures.
As a consequence the state and many of its institutions are illegitimate organisation which:
- extort by means of taxes
- kidnap in the form of conscription
- kidnap in the form of imprisonment
- murder in the form of state-authorized executions
- commit mass perpetual genocide by means of state and industry-promoted wars and conflicts

Anarchists are not - contrary to public opinion - opposed to the idea of law and order; they merely think that it should be people-orientated instead of existing to protect privilege and power. States, however, have always tried to consolidate their authoritative powers by depicting and victimising libertarians as violent and a threat to public order. Paradoxically, they have then used state power, the police, the judiciary and state institutions to subsequently commit horrific acts of execution, torture and imprisonment against anarchists.
Examples include:
- the Spanish Holocaust when after the Spanish Civil War, Franco’s fascists massacred 100,000s of libertarians and who had defended the country
- mass execution of Russian anarchists after the Russian Revolution
- execution and martyrdom of the Haymarket anarchists, where eight people were tried, four of which were hanged, after a protest for better working conditions and an 8-hour day
- execution of Sacco and Vanetti
- mass deportations of pro-anarchist immigrants
- crucifixion of Jesus Christ, arguably the first anarchist, if not a proponent of anarchist values!

The key to understanding anarchism is to understand that social organisation should be done bottom-up, where people have control over their lives, rather than top-down governance enforced by violence or threats.

Anarchism is social order, not political order.
