Natalia Romik searches for hiding places in Poland - Jewish hiding places from the time of the Holocaust. Whether in a 600-year-old oak tree or in a bunker in the cemetery, everywhere she comes across incredible stories of the struggle for survival. Natalia Romik actively pursues a culture of remembrance and aims to find out more about the secret hiding places before they vanish forever.
At the Jewish cemetery in Warsaw, amongst the more than 200,000 graves, Natalia Romik uncovers the entrance to a bunker, where up to 30 people are said to have found refuge during the shoah. In the Carpathian Mountains, she examines the 650-year-old "Jósef" oak tree that adorned the back of the 100 zloty note. In the hollow of the tree, two brothers are said to have hidden and survived the terrible time of the Holocaust.
The hiding places are quasi-invisible monuments to trauma, but also signs of the will to survive and a resourcefulness marked by hardship. These places are not only hiding spots but more importantly survival places, each telling a unique story. A story that must be kept alive as much as possible.
