To kick-off our introductory programme to the Kultursymposium Weimar 2021, our moderator Vivian Perkovic welcomes the Secretary General of the Goethe-Institut Johannes Ebert. We begin our journey to Weimar with the touching project "Old Wishes" by the Goethe-Instituts Cairo and Khartoum.
The multimedia project Old Wishes revives the wishes of the Friends of Al-Sibayan magazine, the first magazine of youth in Sudan and the Arab world, and monitors the wishes that kids sent to the magazine from 1946 to 1990. The artist and initiator of the project Abdalsalam Alhaj visited these children – now adults. In video interviews he explores their dreams from the past and asks, if and how they came true. Thereby, it is always also about the reality of Sudan today. In this feature, we show three of the resulting interviews.
For the Kultursymposium Weimar 2021 there will also be an online exhibition with even more interviews! You will find the link on our website from 15 June: https://goethe.de/kultursymposium/en Afterwards, the project will be presented in a gallery in Khartoum as an exhibition including VR experiences, videos, and photos.
Further contributions to the introductory programme:
26 May– 5 PM (CEST): food:generations. The Secret of the Pierogi (Goethe-Institut Warsaw)
02 June 2021 – 5 PM (CEST): Intergenerational Trauma. The case of the Partition in India (Goethe-Institut New Delhi)
