The purpose of this build for most people would be a general use PC, office/school work, casual gaming, and light content creation. It would make for a nice, dedicated streaming PC as well. We will be using this for a video capture PC for our benchmarking station with the Live Gamer 4K capture card.

There are few school/office tasks this PC won’t do. It’s effectively a i7-7700K at stock speed, that’s pretty solid for those uses. For GAMING on the other hand, it’s a compromise choice. It is PLENTY for most games over 2 years old and even for some newer games that are casual or F2P.

Overwatch
League of Legends
Apex Legends
DOTA II
Rainbow Six Siege
GTA V
Fortnite
CS:GO
Most games in the top 30 on Twitch… will all play perfectly fine at 1080p 60+ FPS on this PC. The key is to skip Cyberpunk 2077, Watch Dogs Legion, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and games of that sort.

The CPU choice here is based on price, availability, and the needs of the above user. Buy more, get more of course… The Ryzen 3 3100 would be an equally fine choice if it were in stock, but it has been out of stock for months. It also lacks an iGPU, a plus to some people for the Intel side. You could upgrade to a i5-10400 if you prefer and get 50% more cores/threads.

Motherboard selection is a tradeoff of price to features. Performance is hardly affected, it’s really about what comes with the board, how many USB ports, how many M.2 slots, etc. The one here is a great balance of price to options and we bought it for that reason.

For us, the GPU choice only matters in the sense of getting a good NVENC encoder, so anything 1650 Super or newer is fine and will do the job. The Intel CPU has an iGPU, if you’re not gaming, you don’t need a video card at all. For a dedicated live streaming PC, you could also use QuickSync on the Intel iGPU to encode and skip the GPU completely.

SSD size and choice is a highly personal selection. We recommend a 1TB boot drive for most people, however if you watch us build this PC, you’ll notice we have a 250GB boot SSD. This is because we had it on the shelf and this is a highly specific task PC that doesn’t need more. We are adding a second 500GB SSD for data recording while benchmarking. Yes, a single 1TB would work better, but again, both drives were on the shelf so their effective cost was zero to us.

RAM choice likewise is a personal selection. We are installing 32GB of RAM here, because it will enable better caching and multi-tasking while capturing 4K video at 50Mbps. It isn’t strictly required, but it will make the PC smoother to use for us. 16GB is what we’d typically expect people to put into such a PC.

Case & PSU choice are also highly personal and depend on what you’re doing. In our case, both of these were on the shelf and do the job, they weren’t obtained specifically for this build, however I’ve used both of them before in prior builds, so know what to expect. Both are reasonable, fairly priced options, if a tad on the plain side without any flair, but that’s ok for us.
