In this tutorial, I show you how to install a new 1TB Samsung 860EVO in your old Mac Pro 4.1 or 5.1 using a PCIe card from Other World Computing.
While the Mac Pros produced from 2009 to 2012 only support SATA 2, there is a way to enjoy the full speed of modern solid state disk drives by using a PCI express card such as the OWC Accelsior S.
Of course, you can connect any SSD to one of the six SATA 2 ports in your mac pro, but it will give you only half the speed.
To avoid this bottleneck I decided to use a PCIe card that supports SATA 3, then plug in my 860EVO, and install High Sierra on that disk.
So far the performance increase is very noticeable because the OWC card has doubled my read and write speeds.
Which is especially nice if you are doing data-intensive tasks such as video editing.
My impressions are that the SSD in combination with the faster SATA speed pushes data real fast into my 24GB of memory.
Once there the system can perform all needed computations at blazingly fast speeds.
Overal, the Mac Pro has been a massive performance increase compared to my old iMac.
Yes, I only record and edit footage in 1080p, so for full HD, I can definitely recommend this setup.
Since I shoot all my footage on Canon cameras, and since my Display is only HD, I have not made the switch to 4K yet.
Other than that, I could not be happier with this configuration. Keep in mind that a new iMac only comes with a fusion drive and that prices for 32GB of memory can easily reach $700 if you spec out the system.
Buying an old Mac Pro is, therefore, a budget option, in my case, I am very happy with this choice!
