SOT, Jens Spahn, German Health Minister (German): "The virus simply doesn't give up. We see that very clear these days. On one side we finally see, when we take the last two or three weeks, declining case numbers, and a steady increase in vaccinations. And simultaneously, the other news from this week, the increase in amount of concerning virus mutations, also here with us in Germany, and in actual fact, with the declining numbers, also a sideways movement. That urges caution."
SOT, Lothar Wieler, President of Robert Koch Insitute (German): "It currently looks like many federal states have reached a plateau, but this plateau is still too high. Unfortunately, the Robert Koch Institute still ascertains, the several hundred deaths per day. And the question is, why is that so? Why have we not managed the infection occurrence number better, when we know exactly how we can protect ourselves. We already know that when, that we can essentially infect ourselves indoors when too many people meet, and are too close together. We have to keep distance. When we don't air out the rooms enough, or wear masks.
SOT, Lothar Wieler, President of Robert Koch Insitute (German): "It's about the following, because the infection of the variations of the virus is spreading, I expect in the coming weeks, more outbreaks in younger people. There will be more young adults, teenagers, children who are sick. Our behaviour, that we all hold the measurements, is the most important, most powerful means that we hold in our hand, to be able to protect ourselves.
SOT, Lothar Wieler, President of Robert Koch Insitute (German): "And when we receive a vaccination simulation, we should be glad, and simply be vaccinated. All vaccinations in Germany that are available are safe and effective, and all protect from a COVID-19 illness. After all we know, they also protect against illnesses with the new variations. The virus, ladies and gentleman, has received a boost, yes, and makes big progress, and we must not go backwards. Every relaxation of measures that is not thought out, accelerates the virus and throws us back. Then we will be standing in a few weeks, exactly at the point where we were at Christmas."
