Germany: Black Lives Matter protest draws thousands in Hamburg

Thousands turned out in central Hamburg on Saturday to rally against racism and police brutality in support of US protests against the death of George Floyd.

Footage shows people holding banners reading "Together we stand" and "No justice no peace" with many raising their fists in the air in solidarity with George Floyd's protests across the globe.

"We want to create awareness for people to know that we want to fight racism, being black or white we just want to set a statement that racism can only be fought only if we come together," said Audrey Boateng, a protest organizer.

"I decided to come here today because I'm also a victim of systematic racism and I think what's going on around right now generally is about systematic racism," continued Andy, a protester.

Protesters gathered at two different locations with both rallies being cancelled by local police due to the violation of coronavirus rules such as wearing face masks and maintaining physical distancing.

Moreover, nearly 9,000 people attended the protest at Jungfernstieg promenade along the bank of the Alster river, while a maximum of only 525 people were allowed by the authorities.

Hamburg police dispersed the second rally at the city central square, Rathausmarkt, as the number of participants exceeded over ten times the amount of people allowed.

Protests sparked by George Floyd's death at the hands of police in Minneapolis have been taking place since May 26 in the US and around the world.

George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, was killed during an arrest in Minneapolis on May 25, after officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes despite Floyd saying he couldn't breathe.
